The High School Percussion Ensemble Festival Weekend began in 2003, bringing to the OSU campus two internationally recognized guest artists each year. For this festival weekend high school ensembles from Ohio and surrounding states attend concerts, clinics and masterclasses, and are offered the opportunity to rub elbows with some of the best clinicians and performers in the field of percussion today. Each participating ensemble performs two pieces, receiving immediate feedback from the guest clinicians. Two honors ensembles are selected through director nomination, with each ensemble being coached or conducted by the guest artists. Past festival guests include: John Beck & Garry Kvistad (’07), Michael Burritt & Anders Astrand (’06), Christopher Norton & Anthony Cirone (’05), Neil Grover & Steve Houghton (’04) and John Beck & Bill Cahn (’03). This year’s festival dates are February 20-21, 2009, and the featured guests are Mark Ford (University of North Texas) and Ben Toth (Hartt School). The schedule/outline of events is as follows: Friday, February 20 4:30 Honors Ensemble rehearsals 7:30 Festival Opening Concert, featuring Mark Ford, Ben Toth, the Pendulum Duo and the OSU Percussion Ensemble Saturday, February 21 8:30-5:30 High School performances & clinics 7:30 Festival Closing Concert (featuring the two Honors Ensemble, as well as ensembles selected from the day’s performances Click here for a detailed listing of clinic and performance times With a limited number of performance slots available, ensembles are selected on a first come, first serve basis.
